The Yamaha AW2816 is an all-in-one workstation which integrates a digital mixer that inherits the high performance of the 02R, the de facto standard model digital mixer used in the world's recording studios, a hard disk recorder capable of digitally recording a total of up to 130 tracks of uncompressed high quality 24-bit sound, and a CD-RW drive capable of creating an audio CD or backing up recording data, thus making it possible to realize a series of studio work from song creation to CD production.
What has been done in the development of the Yamaha AW2816 was to thoroughly pursue the creation of a device that retains all the functions required to achieve the high quality of the AW4416 while being faithful to its design concept and basic performance, but which is more compact in size and easier to use. The highly acclaimed "QUICK REC" function in the AW4416 has been refined to make it easier to use and new functions, such as the "MIDI REMOTE" function, which demonstrates the AW2816's power when it is set up with a MIDI device or PC, have been added. Such features as these are just what you would expect from the AW2816, and they give its user a powerful advantage.
This workstation integrates a 28-channel full digital mixer, a 16-track (+ stereo track) 24-bit hard disk recorder, and a CD-RW drive, etc., making it possible to carry out the full recording operation from pro-grade multi-track recording to CD production. The great advantage of an integrated workstation is that the labor and expense of purchasing, installing and setting up individual pieces of equipment can not only be cut, but sound processing can be conducted in a fully digital environment, thus enabling the user to avoid sound quality degradation during the production process. The ability to exercise total control of the recording data and the mixing data as a single file also contributes greatly to the workstation's convenience.
The AD/DA converter, which plays a vital role in determining sound quality is a 24-bit unit, and internal DSP processing assures 32-bit (EQ = 54 bit) high resolution and realizes overwhelmingly high sound quality. The head amp, which influences the character of the sound includes carefully selected parts to provide a design that achieves thorough high sound quality. An XLR terminal which enables a phantom power supply to be supplied to ch. 1 and ch. 2 is also provided and a high impedance input that is convenient for direct connection of a guitar or other instrument has been made standard equipment for ch. 8.
There are 9 motor driven faders (60 mm), which are synonymous with high class mixers, built into AW2816. Not only does this demonstrate the force in automated mixing, but the faders move to the set positions instantaneously when switching scenes or layers, enabling the realization of an excellent recording operation environment.

The highly acclaimed "QUICK RECORD" function in the Yamaha AW2816 is a graphic interface inside the unit showing an internal 'patchbay' allowing the user to visually connect inputs to recording tracks by connecting "virtual cables". This helps the user to set and grasp the flow of signals between channels and tracks, which tends to be complex, with visuals.
Installation of the optional I/O card slot (Mini-YGDAI) enables input and output of high quality analog sounds, as well as expansion to input and output data in the ADAT, TASCAM and AES/EBU formats. The AW2816 is also compatible with Waves Y56K plug-in Effects Card and the Apogee AP8 Series Cards.
The AW2816 includes a SCSI terminal as standard equipment and if it is expanded with an external SCSI device, large volumes of data can be backed up at high speed and WAV data can be exported. Besides this, it is possible to connect a convenient foot switch to a punch I/O while strumming a guitar. In combination with the jog dial used to set various functions. these functions broaden the range of easy operation.
