I have a MacMini 2 GHz running with 10.5.8 server and wanted to migrate to a new MacMini Server 10.6.
1. First attempt: starting the new machine, trying to migrate with the assistant from a connnected FW drive with a clone of the 10.5 disk. When the volume is displayed I get the message that a server with dynamic net addresses cannot be migrated. But which is not true. The actual server has a fixed IP address. I cannot continue, only abort.
2. Trying to ugrade the clone disk on the original Mini. The procedure stops "MacOSX cannot be installed on that computer. However this Mini fulfils the minimum requirements for HW.
I do not want to make a manual migration, as the Workgroup Mananger does not maintain the passwords when exporting user and groups.
Any suggestions?

Hi Urs - I have used the following to successfully migrate several OS X 10.5.8 Servers to Snow Leopard:
1. Always backup your existing server, and retain for safety
2. Boot old server from install disk and repair disk and permissions.
2. Then, boot from your new MacMini containing virgin install of Snow Leopard
3. During initial startup, you will be given the option to 'migrate/upgrade from another OSX server.
4. Choose that option and proceed with instructions on screen.
Warning - do this only if your current Leopard Server install is happy. Migrating a broken server to a new one will not resolve underlying problems. You can also migrate a SL server to a clean SL install, again, it will not fix broken config files, etc on your old server.
Advice – when in doubt, reconfigure from the ground up. Reloading settings or migrating can re-introduce old gremlins that take hours or days to diagnose and resolve. And never do anything until your DNS is rock solid and authoritative.
Hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of further help.
