Is my Macbook Air faulty?

I have so far resisted updating to Yosemite, as I've read some horror stories about it, and as I'm new to the Macbook (having previously had Windows PCs), I'm not sure I know enough to be able to undo the update (or if that's even possible) if it goes wrong.
Anyway the problem I'm having is that I keep getting (with increasing frequency) Sleep Wake failures. Basically the Mac won't come out of sleep mode and is completely unresponsive. I keep trying and eventually it will respond and wake up, and it says there's been a Sleep Wake failure. What I'm also finding is that when the machine finally wakes up, the wi-fi connection is lost and I have to restart the machine to get the wi-fi working.
This first happened a few weeks ago and has increased in frequency so it's now happening pretty much every day. I'm concerned that at some point it's just not going to wake up at all.
I bought the machine from John Lewis and I live nowhere near an Apple store. Should I be treating this as a faulty machine and asking John Lewis for a repair/replacement? Or might upgrading to Yosemite solve the problem?
I've had an iPad mini for some time and it's always worked beautifully. Perhaps unrealistically I expected the Macbook to be the same, so it's really disappointing to have this problem having made the leap from Windows and paying so much.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
It's not a hardware problem, so changing the Mac would only solve the problem because you got a clean OS. You could try a reinstall of the OS: OS X Mavericks: Reinstall OS X. If after doing so, the issue reapears, then bring it to the purchase store, explain the issue (likely with a video, because, thanks to Murphy's law, when you go to the store, the Mac works...only for the time you're in the store.) and tell them you did a full OS repair, and that it didn't work, meaning it's a hardware issue, and ask for an exchange.
