Well, it had to happen one day, I am now passing on my 8-1/2 year old G4-450 to my wife. This machine has run every OS from the 8.6 it came with to 10.5 today. It's ease of upgrade is amazing and the implants include an OWC G4-1.2GHz card, an ATA controller card to enable 128GB plus hard discs, a USB card, Airport card, an ATI 8500 graphics card and a bluetooth stick.
With all of this, it continues in operation today, running nearly continuously with no problems (the fans are a little noisier). It is only my requirements for video editing that has meant I need to move on, iMovie 4 and iDVD 4 are the end of the line for disc creation and HD is not really an option. I only hope my new MacPro 2.8 will have deliver the same level of service.
Talking of service, I got this machine as a free replacement for my 2 yr old 20th Anniversary Mac after it had a sound problem that could not be fixed. So it is actually 10-1/2 years since I "bought" it. Apple's service was excellent.
Show me a PC manufacturer where you could save the same.

Here's my two cents. I purchased my 400 mhz AGP Sawtooth in 2000 w/ OS 9.0 1 installed, and I had no inkling about the fun and joy I was about to experience. I would run Photoshop 6, iTunes, Nikon scan, Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Quark, etc. all at the same time........and although Photoshop would take 30, 40, 50 seconds to process a high rez scan command, I thought it was lightning fast. The Sawtooth was clearly faster than my friends' PCs with the faster Intel processors. Didn't you love Sound Jam (now the designers of iTunes), with Its funky graphics visualizer options. Once-in-a-while my G4 would crash from bottlenecking with all those applications opened. But it always got back up and finished the race, or tried again.
My first upgrade was adding RAM to the full complement of 1536 MB, and that increased the speed of processing. I have added large capacity Hard Drives, and upgraded the CPU to a dual 1.8 Ghz 7447A; and now Photoshop really does process lightning fast....well fast, really, in seconds. I've installed an M-audio 7.1 sound card, with the resulting fidelity richer, and clearer. Upgrading has been easy, and fun! Next I will upgrade the power supply to an ATX 550 W unit that I just purchased after some research. Then I will upgrade the AGP card to the 9800 Radeon Pro 256, and the monitor.....+you get the picture+. Upgrading isn't economical, but I do it because it's fun to see how far the Sawtooth will go.
I also have to give high praise to Apple for the easy, and efficient Operating Systems they have developed. And I can't say enough about the support I get from hardware, and software developers; and other Mac users. I always find someone who is happy, and willing to lend support. My AGP G4 is still cranking. What a great machine! I can't complain, and I just don't know enough to complain.
